Hi, its me Maggie
“It was around Oct 2018. I wanted to make something unique but also practical for my closest family and friends for Christmas. Something sustainable and durable. It was the perfect opportunity to learn a new skill I always had on the bucket list. I signed up to a pottery class, I had 2 months to make a handful of cups, it should have been easy. Well it wasn’t. I’m no art student, so I had a lot of questions. Being a flight attendant is my day job, and it is the best job in my eyes. So good, I've been flying for 12 years now, but I need a creative outlet when I'm not flying. I can sew, I can solder jewellery, I'm a yoga teacher, and so why not ceramics too.
I fell in love with Stonewares. The grainy texture of the rougher clay took even more patience to master, thankfully I found that challenge addictive. The first time in years, I would sit ever so still, quiet, and without a phone in my hand but I needed to find a studio.I took up rent in a shared space in Botany, 6 months later, and with lots and lots of practice, they finally got their cups. It was so satisfying seeing my mugs being used daily that it gave me even more joy to continue honing my skills.
People I knew started following the journey and wanted their own unique pieces for themselves. I started receiving more orders and requests, and with that, Made for a friend was born. I've since evolved into other essential homewares like the popular spoon rest and butter dishes. Of them all, my favourite piece to throw right now would be the large sharing dish. Stunning as a table top fruit bowl but also practical for sharing pasta and salads.
So if you see me around with a smudge of clay in my hair, give me a wave, send a smile my way, and let me know.”
